In thermal spray technology, abrasives and fused mineral powders are extensively used. They serve two main purposes: for the preparatory treatment of a substrate to be coated and for direct use as a powdered spray medium.

Aluminum oxide, when employed as a spray medium, is capable of producing a dense coating. This coating is characterized by excellent dielectric properties. Consequently, it is highly suitable for applications that demand resistance to abrasive wear and protection against oxidation.
